Ramree Island
Ramree is an island off the coast of Rakhine state , Myanmar . the area of the island is approximately 1,350 square Kilo meter. in the Burmese language it is called Yanbye island . the canal is separated from the mainland by a narrow canal like strait , which is only 150 meter wide .there is a bridge over the island that connects the island with the continental shore .
during world war II , Ramree island was the site of number of military battles, but the truly terrifying action began after the military maneuvers ended .
on January 26,1945 , British troops made their way to Ramree island so they could establish new airbase . But to achieve that they had to first drive out the Japanese soldiers out. after a very hard fight he British were successful in driving out the Japanese soldiers . the soldiers were driven into the dense mangrove swamp that covered some ten miles of the island . while this may seem a good opportunity for the soldiers to hide and regroup and plan an attack n the enemy forces , most of the Japanese soldiers would never be heard from again .
unfortunately for the fleeing soldiers , the mangrove in Ramree island is home to a large number of the worlds greatest reptilian predator- the saltwater crocodile . these creatures can grow over to 20 feet in length and weight over 2000 pounds in some cases. although the examples of such cases are very rare , even a mid sized crocodile of that species can easily kill a human .
the saltwater crocodiles have a long history of attacking humans who wander into heir territory . so when nearly 1,000 panicked soldiers came into the dense swamp of Ramree , the creatures likely had a feast .
around 500 Japanese soldiers are thought to have escaped those swamps and 20 of them were recaptured by the British forces . however there were around 500 of them that were notable to escape . the survivors are reported to have told horrific tales of dozens of crocodiles attacking the soldiers and appearing out of nowhere to drag off some poor soul. the nights were said to have been filled with dire screams , gunfire and sounds of animal attacks .
the story of the Ramree massacre was reported by several newspapers .this incident was recorded in the Guinness book of world records as ' most number of casualties in a crocodile attack .'
